It was built by the then ruler Ummayad Emir Abd'Al Rahman I around the 8th century. He believed that this would be the greatest mosque in the Islamic world and stand testimony to his great reign.When the Christians regained power in the 1230's, the mosque underwent a makeover of sorts to become a church. The influence of the architecture typical to both these religions is still quite evident in the structure standing today.
