India : Swine flu claims 2 more lives, toll 35
Via The Pioneer :" Two more persons succumbed to the deadly swine flu and another died of dengue in the national Capital on Monday taking the total toll of those affected by swine flu to 35 and dengue to four. Meanwhile, 20 patients tested positive for the H1N1 influenza too. With these fresh cases, the total number of infected people has reached 1,165. Dr Debashish Bhattacharya, Nodal Officer for swine flu, Delhi Government said, "Both were residents of Delhi. One was admitted in the Sir Gangaram Hospital and the other was a child who was undergoing treatment in the Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalya Hospital." Banerjee added, "With this, the toll in the city alone is 22 as of now whereas 13 others who succumbed to this virus were from the other States.
"Taking precautionary measures, the Delhi Government has reserved an eight-bed cell in Lok Nayak Jai Prakash hospital for athletes participating in the Commonwealth Games and suffering from swine flu. "A complete isolated facility has been created on the fifth floor of the hospital that will cater to any athlete testing positive for the H1N1 virus during the Commonwealth Games," Medical Superintendent LNJP hospital, Amit Banerjee said.
Swine flu cases have been on a rise since early August 2010 and have crossed the 1,300 mark in the national capital. Health Minister Kiran Walia said, "This hospital has been selected as it is close to many Commonwealth Games venues. Suppose there is a case reported from Indira Gandhi Sports Complex or Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, this hospital will be easily accessible in least time. The eight-bed facility will have a separate security arrangement, a direct vehicular access and a separate lift," said Banerjee."

Egypt : Precautions urged
An article from Al-Ahram Weekly :" The death from bird flu of a 20 year-old woman from the Shubra Al-Kheima district of Qalioubiya governorate on 27 July, and of a 33 year-old woman from the same governorate on 29 August, brings the total death toll from avian flu in Egypt to 112 since the virus first appeared. The two deaths are the eighth and ninth fatality this year.
The bird flu virus H5N1 was first recorded in Egypt in 2006. Precautionary measures have long been in effect, though they are now being upgraded, says Mona Mehrez, head of the Central Laboratory for Poultry Monitoring at the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. The sale of live poultry is once again to be banned across Egypt's 29 governorates, and a major awareness campaign has been launched to alert the public to the benefits of buying frozen fowl.
"Nearly 20 per cent of Cairo's poultry stores sell frozen birds. This percentage must be substantially increased over the next two years," says Mehrez.

India : Rabies Death Toll in Bali Now Put at 93
An article from Bali Discovery :" Bali's Rabies epidemic continues to plague the island. According to Radar Bali, a total of 93 people have died from suspected rabies spread from dog bites, despite massive expenditures and efforts to inoculate pet dogs and eliminate stray animals.
Ketut Teneng, the spokesman for the Bali provincial government, said that 93 people have died after suffering dog bites. Of that total, he said, 41 of those deaths were clinically linked to rabies through laboratory tests on the victims. The remaining victims were buried without aid of laboratory test but after exhibiting symptoms consistent with a rabies infection.
The number of new dog bites reported in Bali remains very high. On an average day 165 people are bitten by dogs in Bali, adding to widespread fear among visitors and local of the danger of contamination with a potentially fatal disease."
